OSU Cardiac Physiologist Receives $500,000 Grant From AHA

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The American Heart Association has presented an Established Investigator Award to Dr. Paul M. L. Janssen, assistant professor of physiology & cell biology at Ohio State University Medical Center.

The highly competitive award, totaling $500,000 over five years, is designed to support investigators with outstanding potential and an established record of accomplishments. Awardees have a demonstrated commitment to cardiovascular or cerebrovascular science as shown by publication history and scientific pursuits.

The research interests in Dr. Janssen’s lab focus on cardiac relaxation. Using novel techniques that allow assessment of contractile strength, the laboratory investigates how relaxation of the heart is controlled. A better understanding of cardiac relaxation disorders is needed to devise better treatment strategies for heart failure, a highly lethal and disabling syndrome.

Dr. Janssen’s research program is currently funded by several grants, including grants from the American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health.
