Jack A. Boulant, Ph.D. receives APS Honor AwardFor his distinguished scientific achievements as a creative and innovative investigator in neurophysiology and thermal physiology that have received national and international acclaim. Professor Boulant is acknowledged as the foremost authority on the responses of hypothalamic neurons in thermal environments. Besides temperature, his seminal studies on their responses to substrates, osmolarity, circadian and adrenergic influences, synaptic inhibitors, and reproductive steroids have provided the foundations for our understanding of the central control of body temperature while providing new insights on the meaning of homeostasis. Moreover, his development and perfection of the "tissue slice technique" has enabled neurophysiologists throughout the world to significantly advance the knowledge base of hypothalamic function. Professor Boulant warrants recognition for more than 30 years of teaching physiological and neurophysiological concepts to undergraduate, graduate and medical students. He has been a dedicated, conscientious and effective mentor to pre- and post-doctoral students and all have left his laboratory to assume responsible positions in other locations. Professor Boulant has been a member of APS since 1975 and has been an active participant in the Temperature Regulation Group before it became amalgamated into the EEP section. He has served the Society and Section well by organizing and participating in symposia, presenting at annual meetings, accepting appointments on APS Editorial Boards, and by representing Thermal and Environmental Physiology on the EEP Steering Committee. At The Ohio State University, Professor Boulant has the distinction of being the F.A. Hitchcock Professor of Environmental Physiology. Like Hitchcock, Professor Boulant is a unique human being and a most deserving recipient of the Section's highest honor. This award was presented on April 3, 2005, at the Experimental Biology meeting in San Diego. |
