Advisory: Scientists to Share Advice, Findings at OSU Research Day

The Ohio State University College of Medicine will hold its Postgraduate Research Day on Thursday (3/30). Research Day features the innovative work of medical and biomedical research trainees at the OSU Medical Center.

The event begins at 9 a.m. in Meiling Hall, 370 W. 9th Ave.

Presented in poster format, the more than 200 abstracts span scientific investigation ranging from basic science to clinical outcomes, such as the research of a postdoctoral trainee that identifies the processes that protect cells from the HIV infection -- information critical in the fight against this deadly disease.

Research Day also includes presentations by world renowned researchers and experts about their latest investigations and advances in the field. Guests this year include National Magazine award winner Ellis Rubinstein, President of the New York Academy of Sciences. In his lecture, “Life Signs: Achieving Success in Science and in Life,” Rubinstein will share some of the lessons he has learned as a science journalist and editor of magazines such as Science, The Scientist and Newsweek. The lecture starts at 9 a.m.

The second presenter, Dr. Robert J. Lefkowitz, the James B. Duke Professor of Medicine and Professor of Biochemistry at Duke University Medical Center, is a leader in the field of receptor biology and will discuss his groundbreaking work on the seven transmembrane spanning receptors. Lefkowitz’s lecture begins at noon.

Finally, Dr. Michail Sitkovsky, an eminent biomedical researcher at Northeastern University, will present his novel explanation of the “Hellstrom Paradox,” which is considered to be a breakthrough in understanding the fundamental regulation of immune cells. His lecture starts at 4 p.m.
