          What to Expect from SUCCESS

 
    • Laboratory Research

o       Perform cutting-edge laboratory research in one of the largest research universities in the nation

o       Faculty carefully selected to provide optimal research environment for undergraduate summer students

o       Access more than 20 core research laboratories with state-of-the-art platform technologies

o       Students will present their research to peers at end-of-summer celebration

 

    • Professional Development Course

o       Professional and Academic Relationships

o       Identifying mentors and labs

o       Data presentation skills

§         Giving talks

§         Presenting posters

o       Applying for graduate/medical school

§         Becoming an effective applicant for an

      MD/PhD or PhD program

§         Process of applying for grad/med school

§         Costs and resources to support grad/med

      school

o       Research Ethics

§         Human Subjects Research

§         Animal Subjects Research

 

    • Clinical Skills Lab

o       Experience one of the most extensive medical

      simulation labs in the country

 

    • Journal Club

o        Learn how to, analyze, and review, and discuss articles from major biomedical research journals

o        Present a specific journal article and get feedback from your faculty mentor

 

    • Interaction with PhD and MSTP students

o       Attend the MSSO Seminar Series (Medical Scientist

      Student Organization)

§         Learn about current MSTP students’

      research

§         MSTP and PhD students will mentor

      SUCCESS students with their

      Journal Club article

 

    • Faculty Interaction

o       40-50 carefully selected faculty

o       Ability for SUCCESS students to identify their choice of faculty after selection for the program

o       SUCCESS students and Faculty Advisors will communicate and plan a research project prior to program start

o       Faculty Advisors will be expected to:

§         Play an active role in the student’s lab

      environment

§         Attend their student’s journal club session

§         Critique their student’s end-of-program lab

      summary

§         Attend the final ceremony

 

    • Social Events

o       SUCCESS students will get weekly updates on Columbus events

o       SUCCESS students have the option to attend other social gatherings coordinated by the department

 

    • Program Details and Benefits

o       $4000 Stipend for the program

o       Round-trip travel to/from Columbus, OH provided

o       Housing expenses covered

o       End of Session Celebration Dinner and Presentations

o       Round-trip travel to/from Columbus, OH provided for the parents (up to 2) to visit student for closing ceremony on 8/9/2012
