Community Service
Community Outreach Program
IBSO is instituting the Community Outreach Program (COP), a community service program aimed to get IBGP students involved in their community.
Currently, COP is organizing an educational outreach program targeted at local middle school students. This program is designed to get kids interested in the sciences by performing basic experiments and introducing them to various career opportunities.
The faculty at W.C. Cupe are just as excited as we are about this year's COP program. The first date of teaching will be Friday, January 12th. The time slot we use to teach is from 2:10 to 3:10 on Friday afternoons. We will be working with a CSI theme this year. The kids at Cupe know this, and are (according to Principal Ragland) completely excited to work on this project. They will each be a crime scene investigator, with a crime scene notebook and everything, and they will work in small groups to solve a mystery that we, the teachers, will make up. Each week they will get new clues to the mystery, and the lesson for the week will tie in to the new bit of evidence. We have decided to use the storyline of a kidnapping. The kidnapped kid is the daughter of a renowned scientist, and she was stolen by the leading competitor of the little girl's parent as leverage for research information! (ooooh exciting!!)
This year, things have been changed a bit regarding the COP setup. We will be teaching the same class every week, as opposed alternating boy and girl classes each week, as was done last year. Principal Ragland has decided to have our program be for honors students only, so, we get the cream of the crop every week. This is especially exciting because, since they are honors students, we have been asked to really challenge them, since they can handle it. Additionally, the new science teacher will be coordiating lesson plans with us, so the students will have some background on concepts and terminology before we even arrive.
However, because we will be teaching the same students every week the number of lesson plans we use will be double that of last year. We will be sending lesson plans every few weeks to Principal Ragland periodically, including our objectives and terminology we would like the students to know prior to our arriving. We will do this several times throughout the semester to keep them up to speed on our finalized lesson plans.
In the upcoming semester, we will need a lot of support in the area of TEACHING!!! I know we have a ton of people interested in helping out here, and we are going to need it! We will be teaching from January 12th thru Jun 1st. That includes the following dates (I have excluded dates that are over our/their spring break, and the kids testing weeks):
Jan 12, 19, 26 Feb 2, 9, 16, 23 Mar 2, 9, 30 April 20, 27 May 18, 25 Jun 1
If you would like to sign up for a date now, there will be a sign-up sheet in the student year at the beginning of winter quarter. Or, you can email any of the follwing people regarding volunteering, or if you have any further questions:
