Biomedical Science Major
Application Instructions for the Entering Class of 2010
Eligibility
Students who are currently seniors in high school are eligible to apply for the entering class of 2010. The Biomedical Science major cannot currently accept transfer students from other colleges and universities or Ohio State undergraduate students who wish to change their major. Additionally, applicants must apply to and be accepted as an undergraduate student on the Columbus campus and to the honors programs.
Submitting Applications
Applying to the Biomedical Science major requires that students complete two separate applications (only one more application than the typical Ohio State student). Submit the following applications before the published application deadlines.
Apply and be accepted for Freshman admission to The Ohio State University for Autumn Quarter. On your freshman application, you will NOT see Biomedical Science listed as a major. This is because only honors students are eligible to apply, and not the general population. When completing your application you will need to list what major you intend to pursue if you do not do the biomedical science major. If you have trouble selecting a major, we recommend you select "Allied Medical Professions-Undecided (900)."
Be accepted to the OSU Honors Program (no application required). Applicants who are admitted to the University and have achieved a 30+ ACT/1340+ SAT (critical reading and math) and are ranked in the Top 10% of their high school class are generally admitted to the honors program.
Read and follow the Application Instructions for the Biomedical Science major. All materials must be postmarked by December 1st to meet the priority deadline, and we encourage early applications. Applications will be accepted after this date until the class is full; however, students who apply by December 1st are given top priority for admission and scholarships. Please note that your Biomedical Science application will not be reviewed until you have been accepted to Ohio State and the Honors program, but you can apply prior to your admission to OSU and the Honors program.
Application Deadline
The priority deadline for submitting admission materials for the Biomedical Science major is December 1st; however, students are encouraged to apply early. Please submit all materials at the same time. Students who meet the priority deadline will be notified by the middle of January about interview invitations. The department will use the mailing address, e-mail address, and phone number listed on the freshman application to contact students. E-mail is the preferred method of communication, and students are encouraged to check e-mail regularly.
Being offered admission to Ohio State does not guarantee admission into the Biomedical Science major. Students who are admitted to Ohio State, but not admitted into the Biomedical Science major, still have valid acceptance to Ohio State. The Biomedical Science major is happy to work with students in selecting another major at OSU.
Application Materials
There is no application form to submit with the following materials. Please include your name on every document submitted.
A copy of your high school transcript (does not need to be official) and a school profile. This transcript is in addition to the transcript submitted with your Application for Freshman Admission. If your transcript does not list the classes you are currently taking, please list them on a separate sheet of paper. Your guidance counselor should be able to provide you with a school profile; please make a note on your application if your high school does not make a profile available.
A copy of your college/university transcript if you have taken or are currently enrolled in any post-secondary (PSEOP) classes. An unofficial transcript or advising report is sufficient, and again, this transcript is in addition to any you submitted with your Application for Freshman Admission.
A resume/activities list that lists your work experience, extracurricular activities, honors and awards received and other information that you would be relevant to the department. Please limit this to two pages. Focus on activities that were most meaningful to you and/or required the most time.
On a separate sheet of paper, please answer the following questions. Limit each response to one paragraph, single-spaced, and re-type the question before each response. In the upper right hand corner of each page, include your name.
· Why are you interested in the Biomedical Science major?
· Discuss your experience(s) with scientific research (such as science fair). In what area of medical research would you most like to participate, and why?
· The goal of the Biomedical Science admissions committee is to compile a class of students with a variety of perspectives and life experiences. What unique perspectives and experiences do you think you would bring to the group?
· Give us a specific example of when you had to be a leader.
· Tell us about a time you attempted to achieve something and failed. How did you respond to the failure?
· What is the one extracurricular activity you absolutely want to do in college and why?
· Please tell us what, if any, contact you have had with a representative of the Biomedical Science major (ie, attended an information session, etc.)
· Is there anything else you would like us to know about you?
