Daniel Janies is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at The Ohio State University. Dr. Janies teaches computational analysis of genomic information for biomedical research. He won an award for excellence in teaching and research at Ohio State in 2007.

Before joining the faculty of Ohio State in 2003, Dr. Janies received a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Biology from the University of Michigan in 1988 and a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Florida in 1995. Dr. Janies worked as a postdoctoral fellow (1996 - 1999) and a principal investigator (PI; 2000-2002) at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City where he lead a team that, using off-the-shelf PC components, built one of the worlds largest computing clusters in 2001.

Dr. Janies is the National PI on a NSF grant for echinoderms (http://echinotol.org) in the Tree of Life program. The award spans 11 institutions and includes 14 Ph.D. researchers.

Dr. Janies' research also applies to the global spread of emergent infectious diseases. His work involves the development of software to map the spread of agents of infectious disease based on genomic and geographic data (http://supramap.osu.edu). The results are akin to weather maps for disease that allow public health officials to visualize when and where pathogens jump from animals to humans and evolve to resist drugs.

Dr. Janies is the PI for the Global Infectious Disease research group at OSU (http://gidr.osu.edu). The groups missions are to use phylogenetics in global infectious disease research and to foster the exchange of ideas between scientists and policymakers.

Dr. Janies' work has been published in Nature and is often the subject of local, national, and international press coverage. Dr. Janies was recently called to testify to the United States Senate and the House of Representatives. He has advised the Pentagon, The White House Office of Medical Preparedness, and the United States Department of State on methods for disease surveillance.
