Laying the Groundwork in Undergraduate Education

The School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) contributes to undergraduate education in the disciplines basic to the biomedical sciences. Undergraduate course offerings include Anatomy, Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, Neuroscience, Physiology and Cell Biology, and Pharmacology. (See OSU Bulletin for listing of available courses.) Discipline-based course work is required for a number of undergraduate majors, and approximately 1,500 students a year benefit from the expertise of SBS faculty.

Undergraduate offerings are vital for undergraduate students preparing for careers in the health sciences that include medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, and nursing. The faculty’s broad range of experience and research knowledge helps to give these health sciences students a solid foundation upon which to build their individual knowledge base for further study in their specialty fields.

An undergraduate major in biomedical science has been developed to prepare students for medical school, a biomedical research program, or one of many professional health or health-related programs. This program is designed to provide a solid foundation in the basic sciences and training in basic research methods, while focusing on the humanistic, as well as the clinical, aspects of medicine. Students learn how to think critically, communicate effectively, and function comfortably within the healthcare and biomedical sciences environment, as well as gain the added advantage of participating in a year-long research experience in a supervised clinical or research setting.
