Biomedical Research Today

Developing ProgramsRecent advances in biomedical science have led to the realization that biomedical researchers can no longer focus on a single discipline in order to understand human biological systems and their associated disorders. Today’s scientific investigators must be able to employ new techniques that take an interdisciplinary approach to human biology.

Ohio State has long been a pioneer in biomedical science exploration. Our research scientists cover the spectrum of molecular and biophysical science disciplines and have a history of interdisciplinary collaboration with other researchers for generating new knowledge and advancing scientific discovery. OSU Medical Center physicians and scientists hold more than $133 million in external research funding directed to finding causes of, prevention of and treatments for disease and injury.

A major contributor to the continued success of that tradition is the establishment of a new Biomedical Research Tower that has nearly double dthe amount of biomedical research space on Ohio State’s campus. Opened in 2006, this 10-story facility is expected to attract top scientists in areas such as proteomics, genomics, cellular interactions and biomedical informatics and will house approximately 1,000 researchers and staff, while providing a centralized facility for educating OSU students.

Increased research productivity is targeted for programs in Bioinformatics, Biological Structure, Cardiovascular Disease, Microbial Pathogenesis, Neurobiology of Disease, Pharmacogenomics, Immunology, and Tissue Engineering. Areas of excellence will have available state-of-the-art core labs that are planned as part of the Biomedical Research Tower.

Research conducted in the building is expected to attract significant extramural financial support, patents and licensing opportunities. The research tower also is expected to have a major impact on Ohio’s economy, generating an estimated $3.7 billion and 17,000 new jobs during its first 10 years in operation.
