Ohio State's Bright Research Future
A major focus of the School of Biomedical Science is fostering medical research that leads to significant scientific breakthroughs in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. To achieve success in understanding the complex interactions of biological, physiological and environmental mechanisms, the school encourages collaborations between research scientists across disciplines throughout the university and beyond its walls.
One significant step toward fostering innovative, interdisciplinary research is the erection of a $151 million biotechnology center on the Medical Center campus. This 10-story, 372,000-square-foot brick Biomedical Research Tower has doubled the amount of research space on Ohio State’s campus, tying together scattered laboratories and providing a centralized facility for educating students. The presence of the research tower is expected to help the University better compete for research scientists and grant dollars in developing areas of excellence and to have a major impact on Ohio's economy, generating an estimated $3.7 billion and 17,000 new jobs during its first 10 years in operation.
